Mitzvah Day 2012
Perhaps the most amazing aspect of Mitzvah Day is that even after 15 years, it is stronger than ever. This year we expanded to five new agencies and eight new projects, plus we reached a milestone number of volunteer hours – 37,500. We are thankful for the vision and generosity of Laurie and Elkan Scheidt and their family who made Mitzvah Day possible. What a tribute to Erma Cohen, this year’s chairs, and the 800 volunteers who gave of themselves to improve the lives of others. ~ Rabbi Greenstein
The 2012 Mitzvah Day chairs Susan Edelman, Susan and Raymond Evans, Cindy Finestone, Marilyn Glazer, Ellen and Herb Kahn, and Connie Sherman, with the help of long-time advisor Mike Weiss, guided 143 captains and four generations of volunteers in 58 projects serving 46 agencies. Heartfelt comments have poured in from individuals and agencies alike, but one indelible mark stands out – the broad smiles and sparkling eyes on volunteers’ and recipients’ faces alike!
We are told repeatedly by our agency representatives that, “Temple Israel is such a blessing to Memphis. As always, your volunteers were wonderful representatives of your congregation. You went above and beyond!” But, the blessing is truly ours - to have the opportunity in hundreds of small ways to make our world a better place in which to live. Yasher koach to all - from the unsung heroes in the Temple kitchen to the folks working right here on projects to the hundreds of volunteers all across the Memphis community! ~ Erma Cohen, Special Projects Coordinator
